The day started before sunrise. At about 5:30 a.m. on Monday, April 13, 2026, a 27-year-old man was found shot to death in the 700 block of West Mitchell Street, on Milwaukee's south side. Milwaukee police identified a vehicle connected to the homicide, and the hunt for it ran all day.

That afternoon, the same vehicle was tied to a shots-fired call near 35th and Walnut, in the 1700 block of North 35th Street. At about 4:47 p.m., officers located the vehicle and tried to pull it over. The driver fled south on 35th Street, crossed into oncoming traffic, and crashed on the 35th Street viaduct at National Avenue — into other vehicles, in the middle of rush-hour traffic.

Police say the driver got out of the vehicle and fired at officers. Eight officers returned fire. The driver was taken to a hospital, where he later died. One other driver caught in the crash — a 34-year-old man — survived with non-fatal injuries. No officer, and no other person on that bridge, was struck by gunfire.

The investigation

The outside investigation is led by the Wauwatosa Police Department for the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, and the eight officers were placed on routine administrative duty. The Milwaukee Police Department released the bodycam and dashcam video on April 28, 2026, under its critical-incident policy, SOP 575 — that release is the footage this episode is built from.

Police identified the driver as a suspect in the Mitchell Street homicide. He died before any charge was filed, and that allegation was never tested in court. This episode is Part One: when the Milwaukee County District Attorney's review is complete, Part Two will follow it.

Case status

  • No charges were filed against the driver — he died before any charge could be brought, and the homicide allegation against him was never tested in court
  • The officer-involved shooting is under outside investigation by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team (Wauwatosa PD lead)
  • Milwaukee County District Attorney review: pending — no decision has been made public
As of October 17, 2026, the Milwaukee County District Attorney's decision has not been made public. When it lands, this page will be updated and Part Two of the episode will follow. Wisconsin Body Cam Central is not affiliated with the Milwaukee Police Department.
